South Korea vs United States in Daegu
(1:1)
In the fifth minute, Seol Ki-Hyun should have done better, at the
far post, than fire the ball over the bar..... and buried his face in his hands in
self-dismay.
A few minutes later Kim Nam-Il tried to catch Brad Friedel out with a
lob from long-range.
Seol Ki-Hyun had another chance to put Korea in front, from a similar
position. Although he kept his shot low this time, Friedel managed to keep it out with his
left foot.
0:1
America's first real chance of the game fell to Clint Mathis, who scored with a left-foot
drive from the middle of the area. Team USA were in the driving seat for the second time
in this tournament and sent out a wake-up call to the world on 24 mins.
Drama just before half-time as Jeff Agoos is booked for pushing Hwang
Sun-Hong in the area and South Korea are awarded a penalty.
Lee Eul-Young tried to chip the ball instead of slamming it home. Brad
Friedel pushed the ball away comfortably and Kim Nam-Il sent his follow-up wide.
Half-time: South Korea 0 - United States 1
Straight after the restart, Brad Friedel saved the United States again
as a long kick upfield from the Korean goalkeeper was headed on into the American area,
where Seol Ki-Hyun had plenty of time to line up his shot on the right.
South Korea continued to trouble the Americans, who didn't look
comfortable in defence at all.
With twenty minutes to go Brad Friedel again denied South Korea the
equaliser, this time from substitute Choi Yong-Soo.
1:1
The pressure paid off and South Korea finally equalised. Ahn Jung-Hwan's glancing header
completely stunned the impressive Friedel.... who seemed rooted to the spot and stared in
disbelief as the ball flew past him and into the net - 78 mins.
South Korea missed the chance to take all the points right at the end
when Choi Yong-Soo stabbed another shot over the bar with only Friedel to beat.
The Koreans looked as though they wanted to win this game more than
America and the United States can thank their heroic goalkeeper for the point.
