Travel to Slovenia Slovenia vs Travel to Paraguay Paraguay in Seogwipo (1:3)

Ten Man Paraguay Pull Through

Slovenia were already out but Paraguay had a place in the Second Round to play for.

Francisco Arce's early free-kick was headed narrowly wide by Jos Cardozo as Paraguay tried to get in front early.

A second yellow card for Carlos Paredes reduced Paraguay to ten men in the 21st minute.

Chilavert tried to make up the numbers, and get himself on the scoresheet, by taking a free-kick for Paraguay a couple of minutes later.

Another Francisco Arce free-kick was headed over the bar.... this time by Roque Santa Cruz on 35 minutes.

Slovenia, already out of the tournament, looked like taking Paraguay with them when Milenko Acimovic's cross (or was it a shot) hit Jose Luis Chilavert and went in through his legs.

Half-time: Slovenia 1 - Paraguay 0

Slovenia started to make more use of the extra man and Chilavert was called on to make a few crucial saves. Maldini's men were tiring so the Italian brought on some fresh legs.

Leading Goalscorers 1:1
Nelson Cuevas had only been on the pitch three minutes when he worked his way through the defence to wrong-foot Mladen Dabanovic and bring Paraguay level - 66 mins.

Another goal for Paraguay, and one more for Spain (currently leading 3-2), then Paraguay and South Africa would have to draw lots.

Leading Goalscorers 1:2
Ten minutes later..... and Maldini was starting to look like a genius, as another substitute, Jorge Campos, put Paraguay in front with a long-range drive.

Leading Goalscorers 1:3
Ten-man Paraguay can't rely on Spain to get them through and make sure of qualification to the Second Round themselves...... Cuevas scoring his second with a magnificent solo effort, dribbling past two defenders before firing in a shot off the underside of the crossbar with six minutes remaining.
