Travel to South Korea South Korea vs Travel to Italy Italy in Daejeon (2:1 aet)

Totti Off and Italy Out

South Korea had the ideal chance to go in front when they were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute.

Ahn Jung-Hwan didn't strike the ball well enough and Gianluigi Buffon dived to his right to keep it out.

Leading Goalscorers 0:1
Christian Vieri eventually headed Italy in the lead, from Francesco Totti's corner, in the 18th minute.

The Korean game lacked the urgency and directness that we've come to expect from them. Perhaps they'd recently studied early Italian videos as the imitated the passing around the back movements.

Ahn Jung-Hwan had the best chance for Korea in the 36th minute, when he shot over the bar from close range.

Two minutes later, Totti fed the ball through to Damiano Tommasi, who shot at the sprawling Lee Woon-Jae.

Half-time: South Korea 0 - Italy 1

The Korean fans tried to lift their team during the second-half and even though they were close to the pitch, the atmosphere didn't seem to intimidate Italy, who did enough to keep the hosts at bay for most of the game.

Vieri should have sealed the game in the 73rd minute, when he broke through with Totti to his left, but shot wide.

Two minutes later, Vieri planted a shot on top of the net.

Leading Goalscorers 1:1
The stadium erupted two minutes from time as Christian Panucci failed to clear the ball out and Seol Ki-Hyun pounced on his mistake.

Substitute Cha Doo-Ri almost snatched the winner, with an overhead kick, in the dying seconds of the game.

Extra-time:

Italy started to look more tired than the Koreans but Buffon remained alert to save a 102nd minute free-kick, driven under the wall.

Totti received his second yellow card for diving in the area and Giovanni Trapattoni was so furious he hit the perspex behind him - 103 mins.

The Italians had a couple of chances to seal the game, even with ten-men...... but this year their name wasn't on the cup.

Leading Goalscorers Golden Goal - 2:1
Ten-man Italy finally fell to a 117th minute header from Perugia's Ahn Jung-Hwan - a golden goal to give Italy the blues; as another of the tournament's favourites go home early.

Man of the Match:
Ahn Jung-Hwan - Missed the chance to score from the penalty spot early in the game, but his golden goal winner will go down in the history books as South Korea book their place in the quarter-finals; a marvelous achievement.
