France 1998 was Iran's 2nd appearance in the World Cup Finals.
Best World Cup Performance:
Iran were only once in the World Cup finals before; in Argentina 1978, where they drew with Scotland in the
Group Stage.
The revolution and war with with Iraq slowed down Iran's progress in
the Eighties but the country is more stable now and Iran earned their place at France 1998
after a fight back in Melbourne, to draw (2:2) against Terry Venables' Australia side; to
win on away goals, over two legs.
