France Knock Out The World Champions
Brazil vs France
in Frankfurt
Previous Encounters:
In seven previous encounters Brazil have only won two games and drawn three (although they
went out to France on penalties in the quarter-final at Mexico 1986).
France also won the France 1998
World Cup Final (3:0) and the Confederations Cup match in Suwon (2:1).
Brazil's wins were a 1992 friendly in Paris (2:0) and the Stockholm
semi-final (5:2) at Sweden 1958.
The Match:
Juan was probably lucky not to get a red card, just before half-time, for a two footed
sliding tackle from behind on Patrick Vieira as he ran towards the goal. But the Brazilian
will miss the semi-final; if they win here.
France had to re-take the free-kick, a little nearer, and Ronaldo was
booked for handball on the edge of the area (although they were in the area and it should
have been a penalty for France).
With the second free-kick blasted into the wall, the chance for France
to go into the changing room in front was wasted.
Half-time: (0:0)
Patrick Vieira headed wide from a Zidane free-kick, just after the
break, as France tried to get the advantage.
Zidane's 57th minute free-kick was much better, as Thierry Henry
slipped in at the far post; to volley France into the lead.
Four minutes later, Franck Ribery's trickery on the left almost forced
an own-goal from Juan.
After Ronaldo dived in the French area (another yellow card would have
ended his game), France broke on the counter-attack and Dida had to spread himself at the
edge of the area to stop the threat.
Ronaldo's dive worked two minutes from the end and earned Lilian
Thuram a yellow card.
Just ouside the penalty area, Ronaldinho wasted the free-kick and
blasted over the bar.
France ended Brazil's reign as World Champions.
