World Cup Appearances:
Germany 2006 is Portugal's 4th appearance at the World Cup Finals.
Portugal's Best World Cup Performance
Third at England 1966.
Portugal have also chosen the former West German capital, Bonn, as their World Cup base and will
use the same training facilities as Japan, at the Sportpark
Nord.
Portugal Team Hotel
Dorint
Venusberg:
AN Der Casselsruhe 1, Bonn.
A countryside hotel with personal service, the Dorint Sofitel
Venusberg overlooks the town of Bonn, the Rhine and the Siebengebirge. Close to Kölner Flughafen (31km) yet set in
something of a natural park, this location was considered the best choice for Portugal's
2006 World Cup campaign. It was also used by Bayern Munich before the start of the 2004
and 2005 seasons.
Hotels
in Bonn:
Staying in Bonn is great for Portugal fans who want to be near their team but there will
be more of a party atmosphere in nearby Cologne; especially as the Brazilian fans will be
staying there. Portugal play their first game in Köln and both the following fixtures in
Frankfurt and Gelsenkirchen are easy to get to from Bonn.
Portugal Friendly
Matches
Beat Saudi Arabia (3:0), Wednesday 1st
March. (Dusseldorf)
Beat Cape Verde Islands (4:1), Saturday 27th May. (Evora, Portugal)
Beat Luxembourg (3:0), Saturday 3rd June. (Metz)
Group D
Angola vs Portugal in Köln:
Like England, an early goal was enough for Portugal to get three points on the board but
it's going to need a lot more to convince neutrals that Portugal are World Champion
material.
Portugal vs Iran in Frankfurt:
The game sprang to life in the 63rd minute as Deco struck the ball cleanly from just
outside the D, to put Portugal in front. Ronlado's penalty, 16 minutes later finished the
game off.
Portugal vs Mexico in Gelsenkirchen:
The battle for the right to be called Group D winner was won by Portugal, in the
first-half.
Knockout Stage
Second Round
Portugal vs Holland in Nürnberg.
A classic game it wasn't, as twelve players were booked and two from each team sent off.
If the game had gone to extra-time, there might not have been enough players left to
finish the game.
Quarter-Final
England vs Portugal in Gelsenkirchen:
Cristiano Ronaldo tried to change the balance of the game by getting his Manchester United
team-mate, Wayne Rooney sent off early in the second-half but Portugal weren't good enough
to beat ten-man England in an hour. Alexandre Ricardo saved their blushes with goalkeeping
heroics.
Semi Final
Portugal vs France in München:
The referee wasn't fooled by Portugal's diving antics but he didn't deal out many cards
for their antics either.
Third-Place Match
Germany vs Portugal in Stuttgart:
Luis Figo clebrated his last international appearance for Portugal, by setting Nuno Gomes
up for a consolation goal.
