Uninspiring Ukraine
Ukraine vs Tunisia
Berlin
Previous Encounters:
Ukraine and Tunisia have never met before the Germany 2006 World Cup Finals.
The Match:
Tunisia need to win the game while a draw should be enough for Ukraine unless Saudi Arabia
find some mad goalscoring form against Spain.
Midway through the first-half, the game still hadn't come to life;
although Ukraine were starting to put more pressure on the Tunisian defence.
The first corner of the match took half an hour to come; for Tunisia,
but Olexandr Shovkovskiy collected it easily.
After Oleg Shelayev's cracking shot was saved, just before half-time,
referee Carlos Amarilla went back to an earlier incident to give Zied Jaziri his second
yellow card.
Half-time: (0:0).
Considering they had ten men, Tunisia started the second half with
more enthusiasm than Ukraine.
Ukraine looked as though they were happy to stroll into the Second
Round; the crowd whistled their disapproval and Oleg Blokhin looked at his players
sternly.
And Anis Ayari almost made them pay, as his 65th minute free-kick
clipped a Ukrainian hand (could have been a penalty) and curled in the air to land on top
of the net.
Five minutes later, Ukraine undeservedly took the lead as Andriy
Shevchenko, running between Ali Boumnijel and Karim Haggui in the area, appeared to trip
over his own feet. The penalty was given and Shevchenko sent Boumnijel the wrong way.
Francileudo dos Santos came on too late and nearly equalised in injury
time.
