Brazil Cruise to Second Round

Previous Encounters:
Brazil and Australia have met five times; three times in the Confederations Cup and twice
in the Australia Bicentenary Gold
Cup, in July 1988, where Romario scored all the goals in both wins against Australia
(1:0) in the group stage and (2:0) in the final match.
While Australia might want to forget the (0:6) defeat to Brazil in the
1997 Confederations Cup Final in Riyadh, they did come out on top in the 2001 tournament
in Ulsan, beating Brazil (1:0) on the 9th of June; in the third-place match.
The Match:
The first chance of the game fell to Kaka, from a Ronlaldo flick-on; in the third minute.
Mark Viduka's attempt, a couple of minutes later for Australia, was
rather ambitious and never troubled Dida in the Brazilian goal.
The game took a while to move into gear. Ronaldinho tried to flick the
ball over two Australian defenders for Ronaldo to run onto, in the 27th minute, and it
nearly worked.
Australia continued to hold their shape and restrict Brazil's movement
by keeping the ball and passing it around; backwards, quite often.
The injury to Tony Popovic, just before half-time, meant a little
defensive reshuffling for Australia; the back line coping well so far with the Brazilian
half-chances.
Guus Hiddink was so frustrated when Marco Bresciano shot over the bar,
just before half-time, that he threw his water bottle to the ground.
Half-time: (0:0).
Two minutes after the break, Ronaldinho passed through the middle to
Ronaldo. As three defenders blocked the Real Madrid striker's route to goal, he squared
the ball for Adriano to beat his marker and score low, just inside the post.
Harry Kewell replaced Tim Cahill and was in the thick of goalmouth
action immediately, as Dida came off his line and dropped what looked like an easy catch.
Kewell, faced with an open net, blasted over the bar.
In the 68th minute, Harry Kewell's left foot shot just dipped over the
bar as Dida looked over his shoulder.
Robinho, on for Ronaldo, had two spectacular chances within minutes of
his substitution; the second one saved by Schwarzer's left foot, as he dived the wrong
way.
Finally the game had some excitement again; it took a long time
coming.
Viduka's lob over the leaping Dida landed on the roof of the net; just
minutes before the final whistle.
Brazil made sure of victory as substitutes Robinho and Fred, on for
Ronaldo and Adriano, combined to beat a stranded Schwarzer. Fred layed the ball out right
to Robinho, whose shot cannoned off the post. With Mark Schwarzer still on the floor, all
Fred had to do was run up and tap the ball into an open net.
Final Score:
Brazil 2 - Australia 0
Brazil have qualified for the Second Round.
Australia will qualify if they
beat Croatia. If Australia only draw with Croatia, they
will need to hope that Japan don't beat Brazil and get a
better goal difference.
Of course, if Croatia win the game then they'll go through as long as
Japan don't beat Brazil by a larger goal difference.
