Brazil vs Netherlands
Third Place Match
Brazil vs Holland in Brasilia.
Brazil and Holland have met four times in previous World Cup Finals; but never in a third-place match.
Holland beat Brazil (2:1) in the Port Elizabeth quarter-final at South Africa 2010 and (2:0) in Dortmund for a second round game at West Germany 1974.
Brazil have also beaten Holland twice; (3:2) in the Dallas quarter-final at USA 1994 and (4:2) on penalties after the Marseilles semi-final finished one goal each at France 1998.
In friendly matches, which this one is really, there have been four draws out of seven. Brazil won a Rotterdam friendly (1:0) in 1989 and a Goiania friendly (3:1) in 1999. Holland's (1:0) victory was in Amsterdam, back in 1963.
Sometimes called the wooden spoon, this is the match that very few people actually care about or will remember in years to come.
In the end, the game that didn't matter much to Louis van Gaal did matter to the Dutch and their three-goal victory over Brazil ended with the hosts being booed off the pitch.
Brazil got themseves off to the worse start possible when returning captain, Thiago Silva, pulled Arjen Robben back just outside the box. The Algerian referee pointed to the spot for the Dutch captain, Robin van Persie, to put Holland ahead with less than three minutes played.
Just after the quarter-hour mark, David Luiz generously headed out for Daley Blind to make it two.
With the home fans already booing their lacklustre team, Georginio Wijnaldum added insult to injury by finishing off Darryl Janmaat's cross; and with it Scolari's reputation.
