Stage One:
35 teams entered the preliminary draw, with the 22 lowest ranked teams
playing an home and away, elimination series first.
Stage Two:
The 11 Stage One winners and St. Vincent
and the Grenadines (bye) played against the top seeded teams, in another home-and-away
series.
Stage Three - August to November,
2008.
The 12 sub-group winners from Stage Two
were then grouped into three round-robin, home and away groups of four teams.
Group 1:
Cuba,
Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, USA.
Group 2:
Canada,
Honduras,
Jamaica, Mexico.
Group 3:
Costa Rica, El
Salvador, Haiti,
Suriname.
Stage Four - February to October 2009.
The three, Stage Three group winners and runners up then go into
another group of six; with the top three teams eventually qualifying for the 2010 World Cup Finals.
Stage Five
The fourth-placed team enters a play-off against the fifth-placed team
in CONMEBOL.
