Stage One - October, 2007.
Top seeds Australia, South Korea, Iran, Japan and Saudi Arabia
received byes to Stage Three (the preliminary draw), while the other 38 teams played home
and away ties.
Bhutan and Guam withdrew from the competition giving byes to Kuwait and
Indonesia.
Stage Two - November, 2007.
The 11 highest-ranked Stage One winners move on to Stage Three, while
the 8 lowest-ranked Stage One winners play another home and away round.
Stage Three - February to June, 2008.
After the two elimination rounds, 20 teams enter the preliminary draw;
to play in 5 groups of 4 teams.
Stage Four - September, 2008 to June, 2009.
The group winners and runners-up from Stage Three progress into two
round-robin, home-and-away groups of 5 teams; with the two winners and runners-up
automatically qualifying for the 2010 World Cup Finals.
The two, third-placed teams play home and away; with the winner
advancing to the Inter-Confederation play-off, with the top team from Oceania.
