Pope John Paul II's Travels in 1981

Pope John Paul II had already spoken out about events happening in Poland (regarding Solidarnosc) on August 20th, 1980.

On January 15th, he then received a Solidarnosc delegation, headed by Lech Walesa.

From February 16th to 27th, Pope John Paul flew off to Asia and The Pacific.

The Pope visited Karachi (Pakistan); Manila, Quezon City, Cebu, Davao, Bacolod, Iloilo, Legazpi, Subic, Morong and Baguio City (Philippines); Agana (Guam); Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki (Japan); and Anchorage (USA).

Pope is Shot:
While waving to a crowd from an open convertible in St. Peter's Square, at 5:19pm on May 13th, Pope John Paul II was hit by two bullets and wounded in the abdomen, right arm and left hand. A young Turk, Mehmet Ali Agca, was immediately arrested and the Pope was rushed to Gemelli hospital; where he was operated on for 6 hours and had parts of his intestine removed.

Pope John Paul II was released from hospital and returned to The Vatican on June 3rd.

Apostolic Voyage 10

For his 10th Pastoral Visit abroad, Pope John Paul II went back to West Africa.

From February 12th to 19th, Pope John Paul II visited Lagos, Enugu, Onitsha, Kaduna and Ibadan (Nigeria); Cotonou (Benin); Libreville (Gabon); then Malabo and Bata (Equatorial Guinea).

The President of Greece, Constantine Karamanlis, visited Pope John Paul II; on April 7th.

Apostolic Voyage 11

From May 12th to 15th, it was off to the Iberian Peninsula.

Pope John Paul II visited Lisbon, Fatima, Villa Vicosa, Coimbra, Sameiro and Oporto (Portugal); one year after the assassination attempt on his life, in St. Peter's Square.

Pope John Paul returned to Rome and held a Holy Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, on May 22nd; praying for peace between Argentina and Great Britain (in the Falkland Islands conflict) before journeying to Great Britain himself.

The Pope's visit to Great Britain, from May 28th to June 2nd, included appearances in London, Canterbury (with the Archbishop of Canterbury, on May 29th), Coventry, Liverpool, Manchester, York, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cardiff.

On June 7th it was the turn of another President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, to visit The Pope. They pledged to work for world peace and justice, then Pope John Paul packed his bags for his second jaunt to South America.

Having already spoken to Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of Great Britain, Pope John Paul was on a mission of Peace to Argentina, from June 10th-13th.

After a brief stop in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), The Pope flew down to Buenos Aires and Lujan (Argentina).

Two days later, on June 15th, Pope John Paul II was in Geneva (Switzerland); making a speech at the 68th Session of the International Workers Conference.

1982 was quite an eventful year for Pope John Paul II and he still had a couple more journeys up his Papal sleeve.

Many people visit the Adriatic Coast in Summer and, on August 29th, Pope John Paul II joined them; making an appearance in the Republic of San Marino and Rimini (Italy).

Yasser Arafat visited John Paul II, on September 15th, and The Pope renewed an appeal for peace in Lebanon; after the murder of President-elect Bechir Gemayel.

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Karl Carstens, visited Pope John Paul on October 28th; just a few days before The Pope was off on his travels again.

Apostolic Voyage 16

From October 31 to November 9th, Pope John Paul II journeyed to Spain, for the closure of the 4th Centenary of the death of St. Teresa of Avila.

While in Spain, Pope John Paul II visited Madrid, Avila, Alba de Tormes, Salamanca, Guadalupe, Toledo, Segovia, Seville, Granada, Loyola, Javier, Zaragoza, Montserrat, Barcelona, Valencia, Alcira and the Pilgrimage Centre of Santiago de Compostela; broadcasting a message to the peoples of Europe, from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
