on January 24th, John Paul II then made his first Papal Visit abroad.
From January 25th to February 1st, Pope John Paul II visited Santo
Domingo (Dominican
Republic); Mexico City, Puebla, Cuilapan, Oaxaca, Guadalajara and Monterrey (Mexico) - for the Third General Conference of the Latin
American Bishops - and Nassau
(The Bahamas).
Apostolic Voyage 2
From June
2nd to June 10th, Pope John Paul II made a Pastoral Visit to his homeland, Poland.
While there, the Pope visited Warsaw, Gniezno, Czestochowa,
Krakow,
Kalwaria, Zebrydowska, [hometown] Wadowice, Oswiecim-Brzezinka and Nowy Targ.
Apostolic Voyage 3
Pope John Paul's third voyage came in the Autumn of 1979.
From September
29th to October 8th, the Pontiff visited Dublin, Drogheda, Clonmacnois, Galway, Knock, Maynooth, Limerick and Shannon in Ireland before flying on to Boston, New York,
Philadelphia, Des Moines, Chicago and Washington in the United
States.
While on tour,
The Pope made his first address to the General Assembly of the U.N., on October 2nd and
became the first Pope to set foot in the White House; when he met with President Jimmy
Carter, on October
6th.

From November 28th-30th, Pope John Paul II visited Turkey, taking in Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir and Ephesus.

It was off to Africa for Pope John Paul II, in 1980.
From May 2nd to May 12th, The Pope visited Kinshasa and Kisangani (Zaire); Brazzaville (Congo); Nairobi (Kenya); Accra and Kumasi (Ghana); Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso); Abidjan, Yamoussoukro
and Adzopé (Ivory Coast).
The President of Portugal, General Antonio Ramalho Eanes,
visited Pope John Paul on May 16th, before the Pontiff packed his bags again.
Apostolic Voyage 6
Not so far to go for The Pope this time - just across the border,
to France.
From May 30th to June 2nd, Pope John Paul visited Paris (addressing UNESCO on June 2nd) and Lisieux.
President of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter visited
John Paul II on June 21st; shortly before The Pope journeyed to the largest Catholic
nation in South America.
Apostolic Voyage 7
There was plenty of time for Brazilians to get a glimpse of The
Pope as he toured Brazil from June 30th to July
12th.
Pope John Paul II made stops at Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Rio de
Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Aparecida, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Salvador da Bahia, Recife,
Teresina, Belem do Para, Fortaleza
and Manaus.
Unfortunately, 7 people died in a stampede during the Papal visit.
Back in Europe, Pope John Paul made a visit to Subiaco (September 28th) to meet with
the European Bishops before greeting H.M.
Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and H.R.H. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; in The Vatican,
on October
17th.
Apostolic Voyage 8
On the Papal Visit to West
Germany (November 15th-19th), Pope John Paul waved to the crowds in Köln, Bonn,
Osnabrück, Mainz, Fulda, Altötting and Munich.
On November 25th, Pope John Paul visited Capodichino (Naples),
Potenza, Balvano and Avellino; after the earthquake.
Then on December 19th it was the turn of Cvijetin Mijatovic, President
of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to make an official visit to The Vatican.
