XVIII Winter Olympic Games.
Curling
Although curling (for men) was on the medal menu at the first Winter
Olympics, in Chamonix 1924, it didn't appear again for 74
years.
Ice Hockey
Women are first allowed to enter the ice hockey tournament at the
Winter Olympics.
Luge
With their gold medal win in Nagano, Germany's Stefan
Krausse and Jan Behrendt
became the only luge pair to earn medals in four Olympics; having already won silver in Calgary 1988, gold in Albertville
1992 and bronze in Lillehammer 1994.
Skiing
Giant slalom and halfpipe snowboarding events were added to the Winter
Olympic programme.
Kazuyoshi
Funaki was the youngest member of the Japanese ski jump team yet managed to win silver
in the normal hill event, gold on the large hill and a second gold in the team event.
