completely dominated women's high jumping for ten years and broke the world record 14
times. The Romanian won golds at the Olympic Games in Rome 1960
and again here in Tokyo.
Gymnastics
Ukrainian gymnast, Larysa
Latynina became the only athlete in any sport to win eighteen career medals; one of
only four athletes to win nine gold medals; the only athlete to win fourteen medals in
individual events and one of only three women to have won the same event in the Summer
Olympics three times.
Judo
Judo came into the Olympic family when Japan chose to add it. Out of
the original four weight classes, the hosts promptly won three.
Rowing
Vyacheslav
Ivanov won his third consecutive gold medal for the Soviet Union, in rowing's single
sculls.
Volleyball
Russia and Japan picked up medals in both the mens and womens
volleyball events.
