XV Olympic Winter Games.
The bid for the 1988 Winter Olympics was Canada's seventh attempt at
hosting a winter Games and Calgary's fourth.
Biathlon
Germany's Frank-Peter Roetsch became the first biathlete to win two
gold medals at the same Winter Olympics; winning the 20km race and then following it up
with victory in the 10km race three days later.
Skating
Christa
Luding-Rothenburger, from the former East Germany, is the only person in any sport to
have won medals in both the Winter Olympics and the Summer Olympics - in the same year.
Having won the cycling track silver medal in Seoul 1988 she followed up with a gold here,
in the 1,000m speed skating event and a silver in the 500m speed skating.
She also went on to win gold in that event at Sarajevo 1984 and bronze in Albertville
1992.
