Jesse Owens
broke five world records and equalled a sixth in the space of 45 minutes, on 25th May
1935. The American then became the hero of Berlin by winning four gold medals: in the
100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and long jump.
Basketball
Makes its entry as an Olympic sport; although professional basketball
players would have to wait until Barcelona 1992.
Canoeing
Although the sport first entered the Olympics in Berlin, the
hollowed-out log canoe had been transporting man up rivers and along coastal waters for
thousands of years.
Handball
The first Olympic handball event was played on the football fields of
Berlin.
