It is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean, with a population of around 1.2 million people.

Economy

The economy of Cyprus is predominantly based on services, with tourism being a major industry, followed by financial services and shipping.

The country has a highly educated population and a high standard of living.

History of Cyprus

The history of Cyprus dates back to ancient times, and the island has been inhabited by various peoples and civilizations over the centuries, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and British.

Today, the island is divided into two parts: the Republic of Cyprus, which controls the southern two-thirds of the island, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which controls the northern third of the island and is recognized only by Turkey.

Division of Cyprus

On July 15, 1974, the Cypriot national guard, which had close ties with the Greek government, ousted president Archbishop Makarios from office - because of his reluctance to unite the island with Greece - and installed newspaper publisher, Nikos Sampson, as president.

He was replaced on July 23 by Glafkos Clerides, president of the Cyprus House of Representatives, after Turkish forces landed on the island "to restore order and protect the interests of the Turkish Cypriots."

By late August, following fighting that left many people homeless, the Turks controlled the northern third of the island.

The state called the 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' is officially unrecognised.

Language

The official languages of Cyprus are Greek and Turkish.

Cyprus is a member of the European Union, the United Nations, and the Commonwealth of Nations.

Cyprus Tourism

The north of the island is busy re-creating itself in the image of Turkey, changing names to Turkish and embracing the life and culture of its northern neighbour.

North Cyprus is one of the most beautiful and popular island holiday destinations in the Mediterranean.

A holiday in Cyprus offers the visitor beautiful natural attractions of the Mediterranean, with unspoilt, unpolluted and uncrowded miles of coastline and golden sands bathed in sunshine almost every day of the year; potentially some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean.

The natural beauty of the island, the lovely climate, the warmth and generosity of the Turkish Cypriot people and the abundant selection of fresh foods make Northern Cyprus an unspoilt and non-commercialized haven.

There is virtually no crime to speak of, and this country is reminiscent of UK standards long lost; where hospitality, politeness and the general enjoyment of life are the daily norm.

In Northern Cyprus visitors will find a friendly population that still welcomes British visitors. Prices and payment is often quoted in British pounds, traffic drives on the left and Northern Cyprus has a lovely climate enabling you to enjoy the sandy beaches, historical sites, and mountains.

Visitors to Northern Cyprus will also appreciate the inexpensive shops and restaurants in Kyrenia. The old harbour in Kyrenia is replete with many pleasure crafts, tourist excursion and yachts.

At the entrance to the harbour lies Kyrenia Castle. The original castle was thought to have been built around the seventh century by Byzantines.

With its 9,000 years of history, 300 days of sunshine and over 200 miles of sandy coastline, North Cyprus is back on the UK's holiday map as a viable year-round holiday destination for Euro Free holidays.
