Where to go and where to stay
in Calaveras County.
Visiting Calaveras County
Angels Camp, San Andreas.
Calaveras County is
located in the heart of the California Gold Country.
With its rich, colourful history, its place in literature, its
beautiful scenery and fantastic recreational opportunities, Calaveras County is a
wonderful place to visit.
The county seat of Calaveras County is San Andreas.
Angels Camp, home of Mark Twain's
famous Jumping Frog, was founded in 1848 and many of the original buildings from the mid
1800s still line Main Street.
Destination Angels Camp:
Angels Camp is located in California's Gold Country in the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada;
midway between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park.
Jumping Frog Jubilee:
The Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee is one of the longest running events
in the State of California.
San Andreas was originally settled by Mexican gold miners in 1848.
Although the gold from the initial placers soon ran out, the 1853
discovery of gold in an underground river channel helped revitalise the camp and it soon
became a town.
