The capital of Armenia, also referred to as Erevan, is near the
border with Turkey.
Romans, Parthians, Arabs, and others took it in turn to control
the city. In 1387 it was incorporated into the empire of the Mongol conqueror Tamerlane.
Yerevan came under Persian rule in the 15th century, and for the next
two centuries passed back and forth between Persia and Turkey.
Russia finally pulled the carpet from under the Persian feet in 1827.
