Although invented in Scotland in the 1400's, the popularity of
golf was hindered by the need for close-cropped grass.
As the lawnmower wasn't invented until 1831 and only really practical
once the machine-tool industry could cut steel gears in the 1880's, the playing of golf
finally made it to America in 1888, when St. Andrews Golf Club of Yonkers was formed.
Make sure you have a Federation Card or document specifying your
handicap. Many golf clubs in Europe will ask to see your handicap.

The first Tournament was held on March 22nd, 1934, and since 1940, the Masters was

In 1895, 10 professional golfers and one amateur played in the first U.S. Open in Newport,
R.I. Shortly thereafter, tournaments began to pop up across the country. In 2006, the PGA
Tour boasted 48 official events offering more than $250 million in prize money.

America's oldest golf club (1888) and founding member of the USGA, Saint Andrew's is one
