Aquatics
Australia's Ian Thorpe won gold in the 200m freestyle, set a new Olympic record of 1:44.71 and finished off Michael Phelps' hopes of even equalling Mark Spitz's seven Olympic golds. The win gave Thorpe a career 5th gold medal and his second of this Athens 2004 Olympics.

Gymnastics
Japan edged ahead of USA and Romania to win their first gold medal in the team gymnastics competition since 1976. America were also pleased with their performancein the last six routines, to take the silver. Romania leading slightly going into the final event, but their hopes were dashed when Razvan Selariu fell off the high bar.
