The opening day of the Athens 2004 Olympics saw China win 4 gold medals, one silver and a bronze.

Australia and United States bagged five medals each but only 2 gold medals for Australia and one for the US.

Aquatics
Michael Phelps
, of the USA, set a new world record on his way to gold in the 400m individual medley. Phelps touched the wall in 4 minutes, 8.26 seconds and although teammate Erik Vendt was more than 3½ seconds behind him, 4:11.81 was good enough for the silver.
