Michael Phelps, of the USA, set a new world
record on his way to gold in the 400m individual medley. Phelps touched the wall in 4
minutes, 8.26 seconds and although teammate Erik Vendt was more than 3½ seconds behind
him, 4:11.81 was good enough for the silver.
