Travel Notes: Africa: African Safaris: Tanzania Safaris

Travel Writers Writing About Travel

Tanzania safari country centres on the northern parks area of Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Add in Mount Kilimanjaro and the tropical beaches of Zanzibar and you have the makings of a great African adventure holiday.

Safaris in Tanzania

Safari aficionados in Tanzania will also enjoy visiting the national parks of Katavi, Mahale, and Ruaha.

It's a wonder that safaris in Tanzania aren't more popular, but don't let that put you off. Just be grateful that the mass tourism of a Kenya safari package hasn't reached these shores yet.

Tanzania Parks

Arusha National Park

The closest national park to Arusha town; northern Tanzania’s safari capital. Although elephants are uncommon in Arusha National Park, and lions absent altogether, leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen slinking around in the early morning and late afternoon.

Katavi National Park

Isolated, untrammelled and seldom visited, Katavi is a true wilderness, providing the few intrepid souls who make it there with a thrilling taste of Africa as it must have been a century ago.

Mahale Mountains National Park

The park, like its northerly neighbour Gombe, is home to some of Africa's last remaining wild chimpanzees.

Lake Manyara National Park

Inland of the floodplain, a narrow belt of acacia woodland is the favoured haunt of Manyara’s legendary tree-climbing lions and impressively tusked elephants.

Ruaha National Park

During the dry season (June to October), the Great Ruaha River attracts thirsty elephants and other wildlife to its sandy bank.

Serengeti National Park

Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, the Serengeti world heritage site is famous for its annual wildebeest migration (December-July).

Tarangire National Park

Thirsty animals know a good place for a drink when they see one, as herds of up to 300 elephants scratch at the dry river bed for underground streams during the dry season (June to September).

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a demanding, challenging feat. But despite the immense height, Mount Kilimanjaro can be successfully climbed by any reasonably fit person. No technical skills are necessary, making Kilimanjaro the highest, most accessible, 'walkable' mountain on the planet.
