Nomadic Gatherings by Michel Guntern
Nomadic Gatherings: Chapter Four: Colonial Gateway - Guangzhou Zoo.
At the zoo it was nice to see the Chinese feeding the animals rather than eating them.
In their pursuit of pleasure though the parents, obviously knowing no better, encouraged their offspring to torment the trapped creatures.
The monkey's enclosure was littered with banana-skins, orange-cartons and Coke-cans; bears were spat at; the children growled at lions and tigers; and a camel that came forward to investigate a clump of grass being offered to it was subsequently clouted across the face with a small cardboard box.
The panda slept all afternoon, and as I tried to take a picture or write a few notes, I was more of a curiosity than the animals themselves.
A little boy threw a twig at me, probably because I wasn't very amusing.
His mother apologised and slapped him.
