China - Differences Between North and South
There are many regional differences in
China, which is the third largest country
in the world area-wise.
One of these differences is the divide between the North and the
South.
Whereas average Chinese tend to consider the
Yangtze River as the line between
the North and the South, scientifically speaking the line in question actually lies
somewhere north of the Yangtze River and south of the
Yellow River.
The difference between the lands of China south and north of this line
are geographical as well as cultural.
Whereas the North features a large plain and has relatively dry
weather, the South is more mountainous and sees more precipitation year-round.
The crop of the North is wheat while that of the South is rice.
The North was where the Chinese civilisation first developed, and the
South was not opened till later. Partly because of this, the Northerners seem to be
conservative in their outlook while the Southerners seem to have a stronger pioneering
spirit.
No wonder then that while Hong Kong was where the Chinese connected
with the West, Beijing stands as the
proud capital of the Chinese nation.
