Landing in Lagos....

Lagos may not be an ideal starting point for a trip to West Africa, but at least the Nigerians speak English, and to travel West from here gives you the beaches of The Gambia to relax on at the end of it all.

The Gambia does offer cheap charter flights from Britain, however; although The Gambian Government try not to encourage flight only visitors.

The worst experience is quite possibly the arrival in Lagos, especially when touch-down is during the night.

You will change up some money at the airport and wonder where you are going to conceal all the bundles of dirty Naira.

Does the country have any larger notes,
or do they launder all the tatt on the tourists?
?

It may look like a lot,
and in West African terms it is --
the money goes a lot further
in the Anglophone countries.

The tired traveller may see the throng of taxi-touts as a touch too threatening;
no sooner have you cleared the customs
than they are upon you.

One of them has taken a special liking to you and wants to carry your bags......

Your grip tightens on the bags
as you walk out of the terminal
and into your fate.

"There is a curfew on tonight
and there are many checkpoints!
If they stop us you will have
to say that you are my brother.
"

Seems a little hard to believe, especially as you have blond hair and blue eyes.

You may be a little nervous, but at least you are in a car and heading for a hotel, or a room of sorts.

There is little traffic on the road because of the curfew, and your driver turns down a backstreet.

Another pair of headlights follows.

Sure enough, your car is stopped at a roadblock-- but are they really police?

Your heart races and you
wish you had chosen
a charter to Gambia.
