Sat. 17th June: (Group A)
Game 14 England - Germany
Stade Communal, Charleroi (20:45)

Not since the memorable World Cup final of 1966 have England managed to beat Germany in a competitive match, having been dumped out of two semi-finals after penalty shoot-outs.

On this historic occasion, I thought you might like to savour this minute by minute report.

England Team:
1-David Seaman
2-Gary Neville, 6-Martin Keown, 4-Sol Campbell, 3-Phil Neville
7-David Beckham, 14-Paul Ince, 8-Paul Scholes, 17-Dennis Wise
9-Alan Shearer, 10-Michael Owen.

Germany Team:
1-Oliver Kahn
2-Markus Babbel, 20-Lothar Matthaeus, 6-Jens Novotny, 18-Sebastian Deisler
17-Christian Ziege, 14-Dietmar Hamann, 16-Jens Jeremies, 7-Mehmet Scholl
19-Carsten Jancker, 9-Ulf Kirsten

Referee: Pierluigi Collina (Ita)

First Half:
England aparently slept at Waterloo the night before, ready for battle with the Germans.

Although there were no goals in the first-half there was plenty of movement.

1min:
England kick-off -- right to left.

2mins:
Keegan breathes deeply. The game has yet to settle. Phil Neville. Owen loses it and the Germans come forward.

4mins:
Matthaeus stops Shearer. The England striker dives.

5mins:
Kahn with the goal kick. Nothing doing.

6mins:
Matthaeus to Deisler. It's slow. Up to Janker. Free-kick to Germany.

7mins:
Outside the area. Ziege shoots over the bar.

8mins:
Janker on the left. He looks like the referee.

9mins:
Beckham on the right, but the cross is blocked.

10mins:
Up the other end. German throw-in. Gary Neville chests it back. Seaman sprints to stop the ball going off.

11mins:
Beckham's corner. To Campbell. Janker's on him.

12mins:
It's end to end. Long ball from Matthaeus looking for Janker. Tangles with Sol Campbell.

13mins:
Ziege free-kick to Jeremies, headed over.

14mins:
Big kick from Kahn to Janker. Martin Keown's with him.

15mins:
England are pushing out better today. So far so good.

16mins:
Long throw from Gary Neville into the area, back-headed by Shearer to the far post. Too far for Scholes, but he manages to run after it and pull back a cross. Headed out by Ziege.

17mins:
Mehmett Scholl down the right. Deisler tries to cross low. Cut out by Campbell.

18mins:
Corner by Scholl. Shot by Dietar Hamman. Safely collected by Seaman.

20mins:
It's all evenly balanced. The Germans are looking better than they did against Romania.

21mins:
Shearer gets back behind the halfway line to win the ball and send Michael Owen on his way. Collina blows for offside. It looked too fine to call, the young Liverpool striker's pace is fast.

23mins:
Mehmett Scholl gets in a close-range shot. Seaman is down to it and has his body safely behind the ball. The sort of shot he's most comfortable with.

24mins:
Eng-er-land chorus.

26mins:
Germany are getting the better of the possession now.

27mins:
Janker touches the ball to Ziege who runs at goal but the shot is weak.

28mins:
Ince to Scholes. Germany win it back.

29mins:
Paul Ince was a little naughty on Janker, but is let off with a free-kick. Hamman blasts into the jumping wall.

30mins:
Scholes heads away for a corner.

31mins:
Ince, Shearer, Owen on the left. To Wise, Shearer and out right to Beckham.

32mins:
Germany come forward again. Deisler on the right, Phil Neville slips. The cross is high and over the goal.

33mins:
Long German throw. Janker chests it down in the English area. Keown hoofs the loose ball away.

34mins:
Both defences holding tight.

35mins:
Oliver Kahn saves from Michael Owen. Magnificent diving save and pushed onto the outside of the post from a brilliant header. Best chance of the game so far.

37mins:
Beckham free-kick. Too long for Keown.

38mins:
New ball. The fans have the other one.

40mins:
Beckham, Scholes, Ince. To Shearer in the area. Too slow.

41mins:
England corner. Beckham takes it, headed out. Back to Beckham tries to get another cross in. Kirsten catches Beckham and the temperamental Manchester star retaliates and is booked. With this referee, he was lucky not to get red.

42mins:
Jeremies (booked) -- Takes Ince's foot from behind.

43mins:
Beckham crosses. Scholes takes it on his chest and strikes with his left foot. Kahn saves.

44mins:
English fans sing out the national anthem -- their favourte tribal song.

45mins:
Two minutes added on.

Half-time: 0-0

Second Half:
46mins:
Germany kick-off the second-half. No changes.

47mins:
Zieger free-kick. Just over.

48mins:
Late tackle from Dennis Wise.

49mins:
Ince -- hard in on Mehmett Scholl.

50mins:
Michael Owen in the middle of the German area. The ball doesn't fall right.

51mins:
Free-kick given away by Sol Campbell. Very stop-start at the moment.

53mins:
GOAL

1-0. David Beckham's long free-kick is missed by Michael Owen it bounces and Alan Shearer is at the far post to head England into the lead.

54mins:
Babbel on the right. Headed away by Campbell.

55mins:
Janker on the corner of the six-yard box with his back to the England goal, flicks the ball up for himself and turns to volley. Over.

56mins:
Germany are shaken but not stirred. Jeremies robs the ball from Shearer on the halfway line. Keown cuts his run.

57mins:
German throw, Scholl gets in on Seaman. The angle is tight. Wide. The Dam-Busters song rings out.

60mins:
Paul Ince is on the receiving end of a crunching tackle. Ouch, he grimaces -- eyes wide open.

61mins:
Steven Gerrard on for Michael Owen.

62mins:
Novotony cleans up another England attack.

63mins:
Hamman on the halfway line to Jeremies. Janker and Scholl. Corner.

65mins:
Scholl takes it. Sol Campbell heads away but Kirsten is on the far post. Seaman saves with his feet; Janker miscues the rebound. Lucky survival for England.

67mins:

74mins:
Germany are having problems getting through. Again Jeremies blasts one into the England area. Bounces off Keown. Fifteen minutes to go.

75mins:
Beckham gets a late challenge on Novotny. Lucky not to get his second yellow card. Collina must be feeling lenient on the primadonna.

77mins:
Marco Bode on for Jeremies.

78mins:
Paul Ince bundles a shot wide. Alan Shearer is on the floor from an earlier challenge with Ollie Kahn.

80mins:
A nerve-racking ten minutes to go. Bode in the England area, by the touchline. Seaman is off his line to greet him.

81mins:
Sol Campbell hoofs away under pressure.

82mins:
Matthaeus is up over the halfway line to orchestrate his troops. Shearer gets the ball away to Barmby on the left. Matthaeus is somehow back to cut out the run.

83mins:
Germany are clearly missing Oliver Bierhoff up front.

84mins:
Hamman and Novotny, to Janker. Lays the ball on for Rink. Shoots wide under pressure.

85mins:
Novotny is close to Beckham again. Sticky close.

86mins:
Now comes the test of England's character.

87mins:
German free-kick. Ziege. Punched away by David Seaman. Ballack tries to get a shot in. Wide.

88mins:
Babbel (booked). English free-kick. No time-wasting.

89mins:
Ziege barges Shearer. Jerrard's shot forces Ollie Kahn down. But it was going wide of the goal.

90mins:
2 minutes added on.

91mins:
Alan Shearer is tired, there's 55 seconds left. Last German attack surely. Seaman collects the ball.

92mins:
The suspense, the fans are whistling it must be over.... it is now!

Collina blows his whistle. Shearer changes shirts with Matthaeus. Two old captains after a hard day's work.

Result: England 1 -- Germany 0

England beat the Germans in a competitive match at last.

A draw against Romania will be enough for England to play Italy in the 1/4 final.

Man of the Match: Alan Shearer.
