UEFA Cup Final
Wednesday, May 16th
in Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion

Liverpool -- Alavés

Final Score 5-4

Liverpool win the UEFA Cup with a golden own-goal

1-0 -- Markus Babbel heads in a McAllister cross in the 4th minute.

2-0 -- Steven Gerrard makes it two, just after the quarter hour, with a first time low drive under Herrera. Great through ball from Michael Owen.

2-1 -- Iván Alonso, on the pitch for only 4 minutes -- replacing Dan Eggen -- brings the Spaniards back into the game in the 27th minute; beating Babbel in the air to head Contra's cross past Westerveld.

3-1 -- Michael Owen gets a penality 5 minutes before half-time, when Herrara claws the young centre-forward down as he's running into the area. McAllister slots it home.

Alavés bring on another forward player, at the start of the second-half, to make it four attacking players trying to get the scores even.

3-2 -- Within 3 minutes the attacking style pays off -- Javi Moreno, the scorer; heading home Contra's cross.

3-3 -- Javi Moreno, scores again a few minutes later -- a grass cutting free-kick has Westerverfeld flat-footed and somewhat shocked that Heskey jumped...... to let the ball under him and through the wall.

Six goals and still half an hour to go.

Double substitution in the 65th minute..... Emile Heskey makes way for Robbie Fowler and the Spaniards take off double goal-scorer Moreno to shore up the midfield.

4-3 -- The positive tactical substitution pays off for Liverpool as Robbie Fowler puts the Reds in front once more.... in the 73rd minute.

With a little over ten minutes to go, Patrik Berger replaces Michael Owen.

With three minutes of official time remaining the Liverpool fans ring out a chorus of "You'll Never Walk Alone."

4-4 -- A minute later Jordi Cruff levels the scores to the delight of his legendary father sitting in the stands.

Three minutes added on to an excellent UEFA Cup Final.

End of normal time.

Golden Goal Period

Alavaés make it 5-0 in yellow cards in the first half of extra-time..... the French referee not having to take the name off a red shirt as yet.

Patrik Berger comes closest to getting the golden goal to decide this classic final, in the 102nd minute.

Second period of extra-time.......

The first yellow card for Liverpool goes to Markus Babbel -- the first goalscorer -- in the 106th minute.

Antonio Karmona, the Alaves captain, gets his second yellow card and leaves the field with four minutes of extra-time remaining.

From the free-kick, taken by Gary McAllister, Liverppol win the UEFA Cup thanks to an own goal -- beautiful header.

Man of the Match: Gary McAllister.
