From March 2nd to March 10th, Pope John Paul II flew off to Central America, visiting Lisbon (Portugal, for the 2nd time); San José (Costa Rica); Managua and León (Nicaragua); Panama City (Panama); San Salvador (El Salvador); Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango (Guatemala); Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula (Honduras); Belize City (Belize); and Port au Prince (Haiti).

Apostolic Voyage 18

On his second Pastoral Visit to Poland (June 16th-June 23rd), Pope John Paul travelled to Warsaw, Niepokalanów, Czestochowa, Poznan, Katowice, Wroclaw, Jasna Gora and Kraków.

Apostolic Voyage 20

The 20th Pastoral Visit took Pope John Paul II to Vienna and Mariazel (Austria), from September 10th to September 13th.

On December 27, Pope John Paul II visited Rome's Rebibbia prison to meet with Ali Agca, the Turk who fired the shots at him on May 13th, 1981. The Pope prayed with the convict and absolved him, refusing to comment on what was said between them.

From May 2nd to May 12th, Pope John Paul II again travelled to Asia, via Fairbanks.

The Pope landed in Seoul and visited Kwangju, Sorokdo, Taegu, Pusan (South Korea); Port Moresby and Mount Hagen (Papua New Guinea); Honiara (Solomon Islands); then onto Bangkok, Phanat Nikhom and Sampran (Thailand).

On May 21st the President of Italy, Sandro Pertini, made an official visit to The Vatican and Pope John Paul returned the visit to him in Quirinale, Rome, on June 2nd.

From June 12th to June 17th, Pope John Paul II made his second visit to Switzerland; this time seeing more of the country.

Landing at Kloten, he then travelled on to Lugano, Geneva, Chambésy, Freiburg, Belp, Kehrsatz, Lohn, Bern, Flüeli, Sachseln, Einsiedeln, Luzern and Sion.

From September 9th to September 20th Pope John Paul II flew to Canada.

Pope John Paul II visited Québec, Trois-Rivières, Montreal, St. John's, Moncton, Halifax, Toronto, Huronia, Winnipeg/St. Boniface, Edmonton, Yellowknife (diverted from foggy Fort Simpson), Vancouver and Ottawa/Hull.

From October 10th to October 13th, it was time for Pope John Paul II to practice his Spanish again; with a whistle stop tour of Zaragoza (Spain), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and San Juan (Puerto Rico).
