The 100 French d�partements are grouped into 22 metropolitan and four overseas r�gions.

The numbers before the d�partement are the official code and can be seen on car registration plates and postcodes.

D�partements de France (Pr�fecture) - sous-pr�fectures

The capital city of a d�partement is called the pr�fecture.

D�partements are then divided into arrondissements, with the capital city of an arrondissement called the sous-pr�fecture.
